Latin
All girls start the study of Latin in Lower 4 using the highly respected Cambridge Latin Course which introduces students to both the language and culture of the Roman world. No other language and no other city have had so much influence, for so long a time, on our own culture.
Everybody, whatever their ability, can benefit from the study of Latin. It encourages logical thinking, improves English vocabulary and broadens understanding of language in general. The Cambridge Latin Course makes Latin fun and accessible while still being intellectually rigorous. The students find daily life in the ancient world fascinating and develop a sympathetic awareness of the motives and attitudes of people living in a different time and culture.
Students can opt to take the subject to GCSE and A-Level, following the OCR syllabus for both. At AS and A2 levels girls combine Latin with a wide range of other subjects: Mathematics and the sciences as well as languages and arts subjects. There is no doubt that Latin is held in high regard by universities and employers.
Greek
Ancient Greek GCSE is offered as an enrichment course for gifted and talented pupils and those who have shown a particular flair for Latin or modern languages. Classes are held after school.
Classical Civilisation
In Classical Civilisation the culture of the ancient world is studied though literature in translation and original sources. Greek tragedy is always a popular module, as is Ancient Greek Art and Architecture. This is offered at AS and A2 Level.
