Sport at BGGS

  

Athletics

The Athletics Season at Bradford Girls' Grammar School runs from Easter to the end of the Summer term.  The aim of the athletics is to help pupils:

  • Develop the skill level of each pupil to the best of their ability
  • Recognise and appreciate skilled performances in themselves and others.
  • Improve their social skills by teaching them how to be competitive, and how to practise fair play and good sportsmanship
  • To encourage all pupils to have a positive attitude towards sport and exercise.

When in season, the athletics group meet for an after school practice and each year group have an individual lunch time practice. Pupils from this group are selected to become a team to participate in competitive events across the city.  Pupils are given the opportunity to try the range of disciplines within athletics including long and high jump, long and short distance running, cross country, hurdles, and throwing,

Events in the year include the Jubilee Athletics meeting, hosted by Bradford Girls’ Grammar School at Horsfall stadium and the Bradford Schools Athletics meeting which takes place every year.  At the 2011 meeting, Georgia Hollingsworth (U5) was selected to represent Bradford in the javelin competition. 

Badminton

The Badminton Season at Bradford Girls' Grammar School runs from September to Easter and the school has entered the following teams into the Bradford Schools Badminton Leagues:   U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U19.

In season, Badminton is practised by individual year groups each lunch time with one session after school each week on the schools’ indoor Badminton courts.  In the 2011-12 season, all of the Bradford Girls' Grammar School teams won their respective leagues.

Currently we have five girls training with the Bradford School’s squad: Anisha Shah in U6, and from L5; Emily Addison, Abigail Buckle, Natasha Gallimore and Amelia Smith. 

Hockey

The Hockey season runs from September to Easter each year and Bradford Girls' Grammar School has entered U13 and U15 and U19 teams into the Bradford Schools Hockey Leagues.

Hockey is practisedtwice a week on the all-weather hockey pitch.   In inclement weather, practises are taken in doors to the school sports hall which houses an indoor hockey pitch. 

Emily Middlebrough in U5 was selected to train with the North of England squad. 

Netball

The Netball season runs from September to Easter each year.  Teams entered into the Bradford Schools Netball Leagues are U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U19.

The Bradford Girls' Grammar School netball squad practises twice a week, one lunch time session and an after school session on the outdoor netball courts or on the indoor courts in the school sports hall.

In season, Netball fixtures are played every Saturday against a variety of independent schools from Yorkshire, Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

Each year, the U19, U16 and U14 teams enter the National Schools competition. 

In 2011, four Bradford Girls’ Grammar School teams reached the final of the Bradford Schools tournaments, these were: U19, U15 and U13. This year, the U15 team won the tournament and were crowned Bradford Schools’ winners.

In 2011, seventeen players from Bradford Girls’ Grammar School were selected to join the region’s talent Identification programme.  Twelve are training in the Bradford Schools’ U13 and U15 squads; and four are in the West Yorkshire Academy structure and Lucy Hemsley (L5) is in the Regional Excel Academy. 

Rounders

A popular team game in most schools, Rounders runs from Easter to Summer.

Bradford Girls' Grammar School teams entered into the Bradford Schools Rounders Leagues are U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U19.  This year, the U15 and U13 both came second in their leagues and the U12 reached the semi final of their league.

The Rounders squad practice twice a week, during lunch time and after school.  Pupils regardless of ability are encouraged to try team sports in school as this:

  • Develops their skill level. 
  • Helps pupils recognise and appreciate skilled performances in themselves and others.
  • Improves pupils social skills by teaching them how to be competitive, how to practise fair play and good sportsmanship.
  • Encourages a positive attitude towards sport and exercise.
  • Helps pupils gain an understanding of the need to remain fit and active throughout their lives.

Swimming

Bradford Girls' Grammar School Swimming Sessions run from September to Easter.

Sessions are available for all standards of swimmers - from girls who want to improve their technique to our competitive swimmers. Swimming is an integral part of the school life and girls will have started to learn to swim in the Preparatory school at six years old. 

Table Tennis

Each year, Table Tennis training and completions run from September to Easter.  Training takes place twice a week during lunchtime and after school, where they are coached by level 3 coach Sally Shutt.The Under 13 and Under 19 school teams were entered into the English Schools competitions in 2011 and both managed to reach the regional rounds in Grantham and Blackburn respectively. 

Tennis

The Tennis season runs from Easter to summer.  The team practises twice a week during lunch time and after school with coaches from Heaton Tennis and Squash club. There is also a recreational practice on Friday after school where girls can come along and play. Fixtures for all abilities are held on Saturdays and during the evenings.
