Curriculum Intent

Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate children. It is a vehicle for personal expression. It also plays an important part in helping children feel part of the community. At Bradford Girls’ Grammar School, we provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music and to develop the skills to critically appreciate a wide variety of musical forms.

In teaching music, we aim to:

  • enable each child to grow musically at his/her own level and pace;
  • foster musical responsiveness;
  • give pupils a means of both verbal and non-verbal experience;
  • develop an awareness and appreciation of organised sound patterns;
  • develop instrumental and vocal skills;
  • develop a sensitive, analytical and creative response to music;
  • develop the capacity to express ideas, thoughts and feelings through music;
  • develop the interrelated skills of performing, composing and appreciating music;
  • develop an awareness and understanding of musical traditions, styles and cultures from other times and places;
  • develop the experience that derives from striving for the highest possible musical and technical standards;
  • foster an enjoyment of all aspects of music.
