Transition Programme

a1-1-646x317

Moving from the primary phase to senior school is a significant and exciting event in a child’s life and as such, can be an anxious time for both parents and pupils.

It is an important milestone which marks not only a considerable change in the expectations of teachers, such as more independent working and self-organisation, but the pupils will be expected to cope with a whole variety of new experiences which demand skills and abilities they have not needed before.

A positive transition is therefore vital to ensure that every pupil feels welcome, valued and safe so that they can quickly settle into the next phase in their education and continue on a positive path to successful learning.

Unfortunately, in these unprecedented times, the Year 7 cohort for September 2021 will not be able to take part in our extensive transition programme that we usually run each year. However, we do feel that it is important that all pupils gain an insight into life at BGGS and that we ensure that pupils feel comfortable and confident when arriving here in September.

Miss Dickinson, Year Leader 7, will continue to have regular contact with each feeder primary schools and liaise with the relevant staff in order to collect information, such as existing friendship groups, which can be used to determine tutor groups and which may also highlight any additional support or guidance that needs to be considered.

  • June 2022: Teambuilding activities (4 week rotation of pupils in small groups).
  • Wed 8th June: Q and A Session - parents and pupils invited. Pupils in the hall socially mixing with peers and taking part in team building activities. Parents to meet the Principal and members of staff.
showcase for parents and pupils to see work from previous year 7's books and the opportunity to ask questions/speak to members of staff.
  • June 2022 – continues. Head of Year 7, Miss Louise Dickinson, primary visits – in person to those with more than 5 attending in Sept – for those less than 5, a virtual talk with pupils.
  • June 2022: The safeguarding and SEND Team to complete visits to primary school regarding any concerns regarding SEND and Safeguarding.
  • Wednesday July 7th - Transition Day - all pupils come into school for a taster day, meet their form tutor and new class.
